Wedding Champagne and Other Booze

Booze at your wedding takes serious planning. You’re alright if the knees’ up is somewhere with a bar, but if it’s down to you to provide the tipples, it’s properly tricky trying to figure out how much of everything to get.

Let’s start with the Champagne reception. The rule of thumb is something like one bottle of Champagne to serve six of your guests. So very basically, you’re dividing your total number of guests by six to get the number of bottles of Champagne you’re going to need.

In terms of Champagne options, you can obviously go for something branded. Alternatively, a number of the supermarkets’ own bubbly is reputed to be very good. Regardless of the Champagne you plump for, it’ll probably be the first lot of booze for the day, which is typically followed by wine at dinner. Again, we’re only operating on a ‘rule of thumb’ basis, but broadly speaking you’re looking at one bottle of wine serving four people. And obviously you also need to give them the choice of red or white.

So if, for example, you’ve got tables of eight, you’re best off playing it safe and providing two bottles of each colour. Alternatively, if the budget’s tighter, plump for three – two of one colour, one of the other. In this instance, the food being served is the best way to decide which colour gets priority.

Next up, things start getting really awkward. Tackling the bar for the evening isn’t an enviable task, given the amount of alcohol you buy depends on who’s attending. Beer is a must, and you’ll need to look at how many bottles the average guest is likely to drink.

Ditto more wine, vodka, rum, gin, whisky and any number of spirits and soft drinks. In reality, your budget is likely to dictate what you go for and there’s really no tried and tested formula for working it out – you just have to study the list and make a calculated guess.

All that’s left is to decide whether or not to offer a free bar. Many wedding parties decide to offer guests a free bar for either a limited period, or a limited number of drinks, before asking that they pay for any booze they want after that. Others, however, are able to offer a free bar for the whole night. And don’t forget, your decision might help decide your budget.
